Today in Clay County, an unprecedented number of families are living below the poverty line where the average family income for the poor has declined steadily since 1967.
These individuals are in desperate need of housing, food, and clothing. Community resources are stretched to the breaking point, and most shelters have extended waiting lists.
The children are the most negatively affected. Nationally, 50% of all children live in single-parent homes for at least part of their childhood. These children are five times more likely to live below the poverty line than children who live with both parents.
Many of these children living in poverty will experience lives of gangs, drugs and crime. Cities and towns will continue to see an increase in crime, drugs and poverty. Problems that a decade ago only affected the “inner city” will increasingly affect all Americans, even here in Spencer.
The Dream Center is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization that provides social services and outreach programs designed to meet physical, spiritual, and long-term needs.
One of the first programs we implemented is a Youth Center in the basement. This is a safe, clean place for young people in the area to “hang out”. Staffed by volunteers and paid staff, the Youth Center would feature pool tables, foosball, arcade games, TVs and a snack bar. The young people in Spencer desperately need a place like this!
Part of the beautiful dining facilities on the main floor are going to be utilized as a “coffee house” serving Starbucks coffee, with live music and comfortable overstuffed furniture. It will be a great place for the community to gather…not at all a “church” kind of place….just a nice warm inviting and comfortable environment.
We also provide food, clothing, shelter, life rehabilitation, education and job training, and much more through our ministries and outreaches. We reach hundreds, if not thousands of hurting and needy children, families and adults across all races and cultures each week.
The Dream Center strives to help solve moral decay, crime, drugs, gangs, homelessness and poverty epidemics that exist in our nation. The vision of the Dream Center is to see hurting people come to know a new life through the efforts of our staff, volunteers, and recently rehabilitated individuals whose lives have been dramatically changed.
The Dream Center is founded by Pastor Kevin Grimes and DaySpring Assembly of God, but is an entirely separate non-profit corporation. We have joined together with other churches, non-profit organizations, corporations, foundations and individuals of many faiths from around the world with the common purpose of meeting the spiritual and socioeconomic needs of this city and surrounding areas.
The Dream Center has an open door policy, eventually operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year.
In addition to food, clothing, job training and healthcare, we provide educational programs, parenting classes and after-school activities. We soon will also provide residential recovery programs for men, women and teens. All of these programs are available free of charge to anyone in need.
Anyone interested in helping with this exciting outreach can contact Pastor Kevin Grimes at his office at DaySpring Assembly of God at 712-262-6292 or on his cell phone at 712-363-4945.
